Progress – the loudspeaker diary

How I go about designing and building loudspeakers - Introduction

Ever since the new Scanspeak 12M4631G00 came out in the spring of 2002 I thought “I have to do something with this unit!” This will be a “best speaker I have ever built” thing. I am presenting this design as a sort of diary, so you will be able to follow my work as I go along. This way you should get an idea of how I go about designing and building a speaker. As you may have noticed all the designs I have published on my site are either 2-way or 2.5-way concepts. The designer in me was itching do make a true 3-way speaker; just at that moment the Scanspeak 12M4631G00 became available for the DIY market. Not that I have never built a 3-way before, it’s just that with the 2,5-way concept it is possible to make a very good speaker (2-way with active baffle diffraction compensation). But as I was saying: time for something different.
