“Thank you Tony for a great design! The Mezzo Proteus is my first DIY project and it really exceeded my expectations. I have listened to a number of stand mounted speakers in hifi shops in the 1000-1500 euro range and the Mezzos compare very well. I find the sound character to be detailed and quite soft. I like the fact that they have very little 'speaker sound' compared to many other similar commercial speakers, creating a spacious sound stage. The Mezzos work well with most music, but I especially like to listen to female vocals like Sarah McLachlan and Diana Krall. The only drawback is that the speakers are somewhat weak in bass, apparent when I play heavy rock like Metallica, but that was to be expected from a 6.5 inch woofer and a small cabinet. All in all, I am very happy with the end result, especially when taking into account the total building cost. I built the cabinets using 25 mm MDF and I thought the box needed more depth to be appealing visually so I added an extra 25 mm board in the back making the speaker 40x24x27.5 cm (HxWxD). The cabinet turned out very rigid indeed. The interior volume is the same as in the original design. For the crossover I used Tritec DR56 and HQ40 inductors, these should be good substitues for the aircoils. For capacitors I used Audyn MKPs for budget reasons, but I am planing an upgrade.”

“Bij deze mijn complimenten voor jouw ontwerp van de Mezzo Proteus. Nu na bijna 3 maanden inspelen valt mij van alles op bij de weergave van muziek. De ter beschikking staande muziekbronnen zijn diverse FM-zenders via de radio (Denon tuner); 3 platenspelers, Rega en gemodificeerde Thorens en Pioneer; cassettedeck van Nakamichi en een Marantz KI- versterker.Er is een verschil hoorbaar bij een FM-zender via de kabel of kamerantenne. Bij de laatste is duidelijk een toename van de ruimtelijke weergave te horen (ondanks mijn leeftijd van 55!!). Dochter heeft de radio vaak op 532 en ondanks dat de uitzending 'opgeblazen' wordt door de producent is de weergave luisterbaar. Bij de klassieke zenders is het mogelijk om een apart instrument te volgen. De FM-weergave is dus geen brij..

De analoge zaken worden meer dan goed weergegeven. In engelse recenties van platenspelers wordt vaak het pace & rythm aspect genoemd; Welnu het verschil tussen de spelers met eenzelfde muziekstuk is waarneembaar! Een aantal opera's en pianoconcerten heb ik naar tevredenheid beluisterd. Opvallend is de 'hoorbaarheid' van diverse instrumenten in het midden-hoog en hoog. Instrumenten die eerst niet opvielen of niet echt hoorbaar waren worden nu in de ruimte geplaatst. Een en ander zal wel komen door de uitstekende Seas-tweeter en de snel reagerende woofer..Bij de andere muzieksoorten, van pop tot jazz, neem ik een soort natuurlijkheid waar. De nuances in de stemmen van Frank Sinatra, Linda Ronstad, Dolly Parton,.. bijvoorbeeld. Ook hier komen bekkens, triangels, enz. hoorbaar uit de boxen. Koper is koper en een acoustische gitaar blijft acoustisch..Ik denk dat de Mezzo Proteus zich uitstekend leent voor weergave van kleinere ensembles. Het grote orkestwerk vind ik te groot overkomen, trouwens ik houd daar toch niet van. Pink-Floyd, Iron Butterfly, Fleetwood Mac, Guns 'n Roses, Loggings & Messina, Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Yes, U2 (!!), Them, Buddy Holy, Everly Bros, Dire Straits, Elvis, Cliff R...worden precies en genietbaar weergegeven. Omdat ik s'avonds vaak na 22u00 nog luister tot 24u00 is vooral de weergave bij een lagere volume erg compleet. (het geluidsbeeld stort niet inelkaar, wordt wel kleiner!) Opnamen van de jaren 50 en begin 60 zijn zoals ze zijn opgenomen, recht toe recht aan, zonder al de hoogstandjes van de jaren erna.

Ik draaide gisteravond laat een plaat van Linda Ronstad waarin ze composities zong van Karla Bonoff; het neerzetten van deze muziek in mijn huiskamer maakte enige emotie los..m.a.w. de Mezzo Proteus is verre van een klinische weergever..De afbeelding van de muziek is groot en voor de boxen. Ik vind dat verrassend; de vraag komt bij me op, hoe is zoiets toch mogelijk, is dat een ontwerp-aspect bij het bedenken van een luidspreker? Ook als ik tussen de boxen loop of achter deze sta, blijft de weergave intact.

Nog een opvallend aspect; De Mezzo Proteus is niet alleen in staat om de kwaliteitsverschillen in de weergave van een MM en MC element neer te zetten, maar de hervonden kwaliteit van een MC-element na demagnetiseren is direct hoorbaar!”

 

    

 

“I am very happy/pleased with my homemade pair of Mezzo Proteus. Every day I enjoy listening to it, I am proud of the result, the looks and especially the sound…. The looks; for a bookshelf the format is very handy, just the right size for a speaker stand. The colour is black piano lacquer and it fits with the colour of the tweeter and the woofer (black too). I built it conform the specifications of the high-resolution drawing I received from Tony Gee. At first he sent a slightly different drawing. So pay attention that, you receive the proper one. You can verify it with the measurements of the units from Seas by downloading the technical data specs of the units from the Seas site.

The Sound; As you know presenting a soundstage can be a big difference between several high end speaker boxes, it depends on the (design) requirements a designer wishes to realize and to hear (Tony G). For example, the soundstage can be between, before or broad around the speakers, with sufficient hight & depth. The Mezzo P produces a broad soundstage before the speakers, with noticeable highs and depths. If you have a good recording, you can point out the places of the singer, bass, drums, violins.. (It is a nice experience!). The lower and higher bass tones are present and more than sufficient; you do not have to use a subwoofer. The mid and high band is very clean, clear and direct. For instance, it is possible to hear the difference between a Quad, Marantz and an NAD amplifier…thanks to the honest way the Mezzo P handles the music spectrum.  I throw all kinds of music at the Mezzo P’s from pop, jazz, hard rock to classical music and I must admit, every time, I’m surprised how it handles the music. For example; a few months ago I listened to a live performance of Herman van Veen (Dutch singer, very good) on radio 2. The broadcast reproduction by the Mezzo P’s had everything; detail, depth, air between the instruments and voices, background, live experience, etc. (also thanks to the technicians of course). Usually I only listen to vinyl recordings; in my opinion, analogue sound is better than cd (!). Because I invest in high-end crossover components, my return of investment is the impressive soundstage. Nevertheless, you can start with budget components or a selection of budget and high end components (ask Tony G). An upgrade of the system is always possible, if you place the crossover network outside the cabinet (for example on the stand or the back of the cabinet).

Before I decided to build the MP’s, I listened to a lot of ready built speaker boxes / loudspeakers. For instance, several bookshelf’s like Dynaudio, JM Lab, Chario, Totem, B&W, Tannoy, Monitor Audio, etc.. Here in Holland we have a few popular D.I.Y-shops. I have heard a few designs with units from Audax, Focal, Scan Speak, Vifa and of course Seas.”
